In last week’s blog post on the topic of cloud migration priorities among IT buyers, we dipped a figurative toe into our newly concluded survey of more than 3,000 global IT professionals and discovered that when it comes to big data and artificial intelligence (AI), the cloud reigns supreme. As an example, we found that big data platforms on their own saw a massive 19% increase in spending over the past year, with 69% of IT budget holders setting ‘cloud’ money aside for data at scale across the enterprise. Across the board, we expect a 13% increase in investments among those currently leveraging the cloud.

Privacy and Data Integrity in the Disinformation Era

Digital advertising, an $88 billion industry in 2017, is driving notable revenue expansion for some of the top social media platforms.  However, this growth has brought with it some questionable practices in how user information is mined and shared.  Facebook became a focus of intense scrutiny when it came to light that during the 2016 U.S. presidential election U.K.-based political consulting house Cambridge Analytical tapped data from tens of millions of Facebook users to build out voter profiles without express permission.  Facebook executives conducted something of an apology tour, testifying in front of a U.S. Congressional Committee and promising more transparency about how user data is handled and applied. VMworld 2018: Five Things VMware Needs to Do to Support an Enterprise DevOps Model

A year after rolling out new cloud services including visibility, cost monitoring, analytics, and security, VMware released during VMworld SaaS-based automation tools, but this is only the tip of the iceberg in helping address customers’ app modernization plans.

Enterprises are now seeking private/hybrid cloud solutions addressing APLM (application and platforms lifecycle management) issues around new development architectures such as microservices and eventually serverless computing. VMware is well positioned through its vSphere enterprise and SP customer base to provide services to enterprises moving to provision containers with security, storage, and networking. While VMware is focused on providing private and hybrid cloud management around early containerization projects involving monolithic applications, it must now turn its attention towards supporting IT operations teams through important product integrations of key technologies such as Istio service mesh and Knative.

During this week’s VMworld, within VMware’s Cloud Services division there was little context in the way of DevOps strategy, including updates on its containerization strategy which centers around Pivotal Container Service (PKS), VMware Kubernetes Engine (VKE), VMware Integrated Container (VIC), and Photon (microservices) portfolio. VMware needs to ratchet up efforts in coming months to move further up the cloud stack and address enterprise IT operations teams’ APLM issues. This blog post provides five crucial moves VMware needs to make to remain competitive with rival application platforms and hybrid cloud rivals.

What to Expect at Mobile World Congress Americas 2018

Anticipating the key themes at MWCA this year is not too difficult when we look at what things have and haven’t changed in the wireless industry over the past year. Clearly we are closer to actual 5G rollouts, so all vendors and operators that participate in the 5G value chain will be touting their wares, anticipating/touting possible use cases, and amping up the excitement for adjacent technologies that will be advanced by 5G such as AR/VR, enhanced video broadcasting and streaming, and advanced interactive gaming systems. On the pure B2B front, vendors will be discussing and demoing technologies that will benefit from low latency such as autonomous driving, robotics, and real-time video surveillance, while noting new business models, service tiers, and applications to be derived from 5G network slicing. 5G readiness, security, fixed vs. mobile broadband services, and regional and global insights will also be discussed, compared, analyzed, and otherwise dissected in panel discussions, presentations, and keynotes.

Vendors’ Private Cloud Offerings Hinge on Microservices and Serverless Success

The most notable OSS technologies shoring modern application development/deployment methods are Istio (service mesh) and Knative (serverless), projects spearheaded by Google and others. Yet, rival projects are emerging, promising to throw a wrench into the mix, such as Oracle’s efforts around CloudEvents, now backed by CNCF. Another competitive threat lies in the potential for disruption brewing among little-known startups offering their own pure-play versions of service mesh and serverless technology to developers and software engineers in the form of easy-to-use SaaS offerings. When Cloud-Based Security Can Mean Everybody Wins

Service Provider Adoption of AI Poised to Pick Up Momentum

Google Gives More Power to AI Within Its Data Centers, but the Biggest Opportunities Lie Ahead

Google recently announced plans to give operational control over the cooling systems in its data centers to an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. Using this algorithm, Google has already achieved a considerable reduction in the energy consumed by its 15 globally distributed data centers, with both cost and environmental implications. However, this latest move is significant because it represents a major first application of AI to data center operational control systems on a large scale. The initiative also provides another example of how AI can be deployed in data centers in ways that improve their operational efficiency, including their consumption of energy resources. Initiatives like this are becoming more common and are often included under the ‘AIOps’ (artificial intelligence for IT operations) banner, a term that refers to the use of big data analytics, machine learning (ML), and other AI technologies to automate the management of IT systems and processes. Be Smarter When Building Smart Cities

There have been successful ‘smart city’ projects.  Orange Business Services (OBS) has enjoyed success working with Saudi Arabia on large-scale projects in the kingdom.  OBS has also helped ski resorts identify where visitors are travelling from and how they can make it easier for them to visit their resort.  This later example is not strictly a smart city program, but both of these projects point to important aspects of why projects seeking to use technology to aid communities can succeed and fail.
