Summary Bullets:

• Colt will expand its network in Sydney connecting approximately 250 commercial buildings and over 20 data centers with services to commence in March 2025.

• Colt must continue to highlight its network capabilities and global reach to rival other global carriers and NaaS providers.

Colt Technology Services announced that it plans to expand its optical network in Sydney, Australia with direct access to approximately 250 commercial buildings and more than 20 data centers as the carrier looks to promote services from early December with services to commence in March 2025. This announcement from Colt is part of the company’s push in Asia-Pacific and will complement its Asian expansion strategy as the company looks to capture the strong B2B network services market growth in the region., Colt anticipates that by 2028 it will extend services to approximately 300 local and global companies with offices in Sydney. While this announcement points to another international player choosing to focus on the Australian market for growth, Colt is not gaining much differentiation from this announcement.

This announcement will see Colt offer connectivity in the Sydney CBD with speeds of up to 400 Gbps, and international connectivity up to 10 Gbps. To date, the global digital infrastructure company has been relying on other local service providers to support and provide local access services in Sydney. While Colt announced that it plans to be leveraging its global partner ecosystem to extend its business into Southeast Asia, the company hasn’t made any announcements about its partnerships in the region. Colt should look to establish itself as a wholesale vendor that has vast network capabilities including that of its iQ network and its global network reach to rival global carriers and other NaaS providers and increase its market share.

The Asia-Pacific continues to grow and outpaces other regions around the world. GlobalData expects the B2B network market in Asia-Pacific to grow by 9.8% CAGR to 2027. Colt looks to capitalize on strong networking growth as it looks to expand its business into Asia as part of its global growth strategy. In June, the carrier announced that it will be focusing on six Asian countries (the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia) to support the entry and business growth of both Japanese and other global companies worldwide.

Colt has been focusing on the Australian market for over a decade. Back in 2019, the carrier announced it was looking to beef up its presence in Asia-Pacific, launching its IQ Network in Sydney offering Ethernet services. However, the Colt brand was/is relatively unknown in the Australian market. While the carrier continues to make announcements about its expansion in Australia, Colt lacks an effective marketing campaign to drive brand awareness and it has limited number of customer examples, apart from its 2018 Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and Singapore Exchange (SGX) deal, or any other strategic partnerships in the region. Colt must continue to highlight its capabilities, partnerships, and innovation to differentiate itself from an already crowded market.
