Summary Bullets:
• Alibaba Cloud has a wide ecosystem and leverages partner capabilities to offer customer experience solutions.
• It could also highlight its own capabilities (e.g., AI, vertical solutions) to differentiate against competitors.

Alibaba Cloud, in collaboration with Meta, held its Customer 360 Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, showcasing its solutions ranging from CPaaS to IoT. The event also featured several partners including Meta, Hyped Mind, Agmo, Neo4j, and StarSG, that bring various capabilities to complement the provider’s portfolio as well as to help businesses achieve their goals, particularly in enhancing enterprises’ customer experience and engagements.

Alibaba Cloud: Alibaba Cloud has been closing the gap with major global hyperscalers (e.g., AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud). It has been expanding its portfolio with digital services (analytics, AI/ML, IoT), vertical solutions, and edge capabilities such as Apsara Stack, CloudBox (see Alibaba Cloud Adds CloudBox and Other Options to Deliver Services Closer to Data Sources, September 30, 2022). The provider delivers its services through its 29 regions, 88 availability zones, over 120 PoPs and 3,200 CDN nodes across more than 200 countries. It also has a strong presence in emerging markets like ASEAN with data centers in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Expanding Capabilities Through Partners: Like other hyperscalers, Alibaba Cloud leverages partners to extend market reach and co-develop solutions tailored for enterprise diverse needs. It has a wide partner ecosystem from ISVs to SaaS/PaaS vendors, vertical players, cloud management platform providers, managed service providers, and developers. This includes major global brands such as SAP, IBM, VMware, Accenture and Deloitte. Alibaba Cloud also offers Marketplace featuring over 2,000 products across multiple technology domains such as security services, ERP applications and e-commerce solutions. The Marketplace offers standard as well as customized solutions based on enterprise needs, with an onboarding process within two weeks. Moreover, it has various programs for developers and startups including the recently launched Global Apsara Developer Community, ‘Digital Heroes’, and ‘Create@ Global Startup.’

Alibaba Cloud CPaaS: The event focuses on enhancing enterprise customer engagement. Alibaba Cloud shared its CPaaS capabilities comprising two main services: Cloud SMS and ChatAPP. Cloud SMS offers enterprises easy integration with APIs and/or SDK. It is targeted at industries like BFSI, travel, logistics, healthcare, and e-commerce. It also comes with an intuitive dashboard that offers analytics and other features such as campaign scheduling. ChatAPP is a messaging API that enables enterprises to reach users through over-the-top communications platforms such as WhatsApp and Viber. ChatAPP is positioned to extend business reach and enhance customer engagement (e.g., authentication, notification, customer services). Alibaba Cloud is also working with Meta to offer WhatsApp business API which can further enhance customer engagement through wider reach, personalization, and automation. This can increase enterprise conversion rates, leads and order values.

Other Partners: Alibaba Cloud partners with local startups such as Hype Mind, Agmo EV and Afiintra Technologies to offer solutions that can enhance enterprise customer engagements. For example, Hype Mind’s Chatbot with LiveChat solution leverages AI to address complex customer inquiries. The solution supports major customer channels such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WeChat and Line, and can be integrated with payment platforms. Key use cases include food ordering and payment, logistics tracking, and customer services. Alibaba Cloud is also collaborating with global partners such as StarSG to offer AI-enabled industrial IoT platforms and Neo4j for graph database management systems and gen-AI solutions.

Perspective:
Customer engagement has been a key part of enterprise digital transformation but it has also become more complex due to emerging technologies (e.g., CPaaS, gen-AI) as well as the rapid change of customer behavior and preferences (e.g., gen-Z, higher environmental, social, and health conscience). Alibaba Cloud CPaaS solutions combined with partners’ capabilities such as ChatAPP, LiveChat, data consolidation, IoT platforms, analytics and AI, are timely to help enterprises leverage their data to enhance engagements with their customers. Besides, Alibaba Cloud’s wide ecosystem and partnership models can also lower the barrier to deployments of new technologies (e.g., pay-as-you-grow models, higher scalability) and address enterprise diverse needs across different business sizes and vertical industries. Enterprises that prefer the traditional SaaS or PaaS model can start small or leverage their existing license with Alibaba Cloud Marketplace, while larger businesses with more complex ICT requirements can leverage higher value partner engagement models to collaborate and co-develop solutions. The collaborations with local players such as Hype Mind, Agmo EV and Afiintra Technologies can also provide Alibaba Cloud with local industrial capabilities and strengthen its vertical propositions. These partners have been working with various leading local players including in retail, logistics, energy, manufacturing, and government verticals.

However, competitors such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud also have a wide partner ecosystem, footprints, and comprehensive portfolio to match Alibaba Cloud’s offerings. For example, AWS Marketplace offers over 3,000 vendors and more advanced analytics features (see AWS Marketplace Aims to Gain Customer Loyalty Through Simplified Procurement and Application Building Tools, June 22, 2023) while Google Cloud is strengthening its position in the Asia market through its gen-AI capabilities and vertical strategy (see Google Analyst Summit Singapore 2023 – Google Cloud Strengthens Position in APAC Through AI-led and Vertical Strategy, June 5, 2023). As the cloud competition increases in the region, it is crucial for Alibaba Cloud to differentiate in the market. The provider could highlight its AI capabilities (e.g., Tongyi Qianwen and ModelScope) and its vertical capabilities such as in BFSI and retail.
