Google Cloud Next 2020 – ASEAN Impact – Part 1: Driving Multi-cloud Adoption in the Region

A. Amir

Summary Bullets:

• Google Cloud announced new solutions and updates to catch up with competitors in value-added services and differentiate in open-platform and analytics.

• Multi-vendor support enables Google Cloud to address the multi-cloud requirements of ASEAN enterprises.

Google Cloud made several announcements at the recent Google Cloud Next 2020 OnAir, including BigQuery Omni (multi-cloud analytics solution. For more, please see Google Cloud Next 2020: Google Pads Anthos via GCP’s BigQuery AI Extensions, July 15, 2020), Confidential Computing (encryption of data while being processed), Assured Workloads (automation of compliance), G-Suite update, and Anthos update. At the event, the provider also shared its plan on partner ecosystem expansion and professional service capabilities. For more, please see Google Cloud Next 2020: What Google Lacks in Cloud Market Share, it Makes up for in Engineering, July 16, 2020. These announcements are crucial for Google Cloud to retain its advantage against other providers in areas such as analytics and interworking with other platforms, and close the competitive gaps in other areas (e.g., market share, partner ecosystem, professional services and value-added services).

Cloud Market Outlook in ASEAN

In ASEAN, the cloud market landscape is unique. Cloud is considerably new in the region. The adoption is still relatively low but growing rapidly, driven by COVID-19. A GlobalData research with 311 ASEAN ICT decision-makers shows that enterprises in the region have increased their budget on cloud services by 8% in 2019 and will continue to allocate more in 2020. This high-growth opportunity is attracting hyperscalers to expand their presence in the region. Google Cloud recently launched new data centers in Jakarta, Indonesia, and AWS is expected to open its facility in the country in 2021. Alibaba Cloud has data centers in Indonesia and Malaysia, and announced it will open its third data center in Jakarta next year. Apart from expanding physical footprints, Google Cloud and other hyperscalers are also expanding their domestic market reach through partners.

Open Platform and Multi-Cloud

One of the key highlights in Google’s announcements at the event is the openness of Google Cloud solutions. BigQuery Omni and Anthos updates will support for the multi-cloud environment including AWS and baremetal. 2019 saw the launches of private stack solutions by Google and other hyperscalers to enable on-premises deployment and promote hybrid environments. Google differentiates its solution with the support of multi-cloud that integrates not only across Google Cloud in different locations (e.g., customer premises and Google Cloud’s region), but also with other cloud providers such as AWS and soon Azure. Google Cloud also works with customers’ own infrastructure (i.e., bare metal).

Open platform is crucial for ASEAN businesses. As most ASEAN enterprises are still in the early stage of cloud migration, open platform offers them the advantage of having vendor-agnostic solutions in their multi-cloud journey. The integration support with baremetal is crucial in enabling hybrid cloud environment across workloads on legacy infrastructure and applications hosted in cloud. For example, integrating ERP data on the legacy server with CRM hosted in cloud. The orchestration across different infrastructure and providers can offer ASEAN enterprises seamless transitions from their current IT infrastructure to a hosted environment. It can also drive business efficiency and enable them to achieve the expected business outcomes.

Adding VMware support on Google Cloud is also an important step for Google Cloud to drive the hybrid cloud adoption especially for enterprises with existing VMware infrastructure. This enables enterprises to seamlessly extend their workloads from on-premises to public cloud and gain scalability without losing control. This feature also closes the gap with competitors such as AWS, who has been offering VMware on its cloud and AWS Outposts on VMware since last year.

Part 2 of this report: Google Cloud Next 2020 – ASEAN Impact – Part 2: Powering SMBs in the Post COVID-19 Era discusses how Google can enable ASEAN SMBs to transform and keep up in the post COVID-19 era. It also provides recommendations for Google Cloud and end-users.
