RingCentral Begins a New Chapter with RingCentral AI Receptionist

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

  • RingCentral AI Receptionist is noteworthy because it marks RingCentral’s entry into agentic AI.
  • With RingCentral AI Receptionist, RingCentral continues its very aggressive cadence of compiling AI-infused features in its overall portfolio.

RingCentral announced RingCentral AI Receptionist (AIR), an AI phone agent that can answer customer questions and perform basic tasks for them such as scheduling an appointment. It can also transfer callers to the appropriate person or department if needed. At the heart of the offer is the capability to understand natural language. AIR is embedded into RingCentral EX, the company’s team communication and collaboration platform. RingCentral AI Receptionist has been available to select US businesses during a controlled availability phase, with a one-month, 100-minute free trial included. The Price is Right – Or is It?

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

• While rivals are aligned in stuffing their platforms full of GenAI features, they diverge when it comes to pricing those features.

• There is no easy answer as to whether GenAI features should cost extra — and not necessarily a right or wrong one.

When GenAI first arrived on team collaboration platforms, widespread fear was generated that hard-earned skills – and the employees that cultivated them – would be displaced. Those fears are softening as GenAI increasingly earns recognition as a tool that makes workers more productive. Mundane and time-absorbing tasks (such as generating meeting recaps, composing emails, and scheduling meetings) are outsourced to GenAI, allowing workers to focus on high-priority activities and increase their value to their organizations. Productivity enhancements have been delivered largely through a proliferation of virtual assistants involving every major competitor (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, Cisco AI Assistant in Webex Suite, and Zoom AI Companion).

RingCentral AI Assistant is New Again and Still Compelling

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

  • RingCentral has labeled RingCentral AI Assistant as ‘new’ but it has merely exited an early access preview.
  • The creative spin RingCentral has put on the introduction of AI Assistant by no means diminishes the company’s standing among competitors.

RingCentral recently introduced RingCentral AI Assistant, a component of RingEX, the company’s team communication and collaboration platform. RingCentral AI Assistant can generate real-time call notes and summaries; draft, refine, and translate text messages across six languages; catch up users on group chats; define meeting action items; and create real-time live transcriptions and closed captioning for calls and video meetings. Currently, AI Assistant is available only in the US. An international debut is planned for early 2025, as is the rollout of more features.

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

  • By marrying team collaboration and productivity tools, Microsoft has achieved a degree of differentiation that is largely unmatched.
  • Microsoft would be wise to integrate its team collaboration and contact center capabilities.

Last week, Microsoft held its annual ‘Ignite’ event, a showcase for enhancements across the entire Microsoft portfolio. Not surprisingly artificial intelligence (AI) occupied center stage. A portion of the enhancements unveiled impacted team collaboration/hybrid work.

Microsoft Continues its Puzzling Contact Center Journey

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

• A history of offers that are difficult to distinguish is a significant hurdle holding back Microsoft in the contact center space.

• Implementing a definitive flagship contact center offer coupled with Microsoft Teams would go far in alleviating competitive pressure.

Microsoft tore the wrapping paper from its latest contact center offer with the general availability of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Contact Center on July 1, 2024. When it comes to Microsoft, contact center is the gift that keeps on giving. Pre-dating this new arrival is a string of ancestors born annually, featuring overlapping functionality and sometimes bearing similar names. Sorting through the morass is confusing.

Meta Says Goodbye to Workplace, but its Absence will Hardly be Felt

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

• After almost a decade in the market, Meta is closing its team collaboration platform named Workplace.

• Workplace users have a two-year horizon to depart the platform.

It’s official. Workplace, Meta’s team collaboration platform, will not last for even a decade. The platform succumbed to more pressing corporate priorities and unrelenting competition from marquee players. Although Workplace is not going anywhere immediately, the decision to shutter the platform that was launched in 2016 has been made and the timeline for its demise has been cast.

Cloud-Based Collaboration in 2024: Change Will Come on Multiple Fronts

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

• The pandemic drove the ascent of cloud-based collaboration platforms, and the ripple effects are still being felt today.

• In 2024, AI – along with the contact center, hybrid work, and mobility – will witness important new dynamics.

Recently, dramatic winds of change have swept across cloud-based collaboration platforms. The pandemic drove the ascent of these platforms and competitors battled in successive rounds of feature enhancements. Cooler heads eventually prevailed, and a ‘truce’ was issued in the form of interoperability between rival platforms. In 2023, things came full circle with competitors reaching deep into AI’s treasure trove and circulating AI features platform-wide. However, AI was not the only force shaping the landscape. 2024 promises to be as exciting as 2023. Along with AI, GlobalData expects contact center, hybrid work, and mobility to witness important new dynamics.

Generative AI Watch: 8×8’s New ‘XCaaS’ Features Yield Benefits but Arrive Late

G. Willsky

Summary Bullets:

• 8×8 is positioning the new video meeting features well in the age of GenAI.

• The introduction is tarnished somewhat by the late arrival to market.

8×8 has announced the addition of AI-generated transcriptions, summaries, and action items for video meetings to its experience communications-as-a-service (XCaaS) platform. XCaaS melds communication/collaboration (UCaaS) and contact center (CCaaS) capabilities. 8×8 introduced the ‘XCaaS’ platform nearly three years ago in May 2021. The platform is noteworthy having served as a blueprint since then for competitors to offer their own integrated UCaaS/CCaaS offers, and customers have come to expect these as part of vendor portfolios. In this regard, 8×8 has been a trend-setter.
